PLEASANTON — The Civic Arts Commission met on August 21st to finalize their letter to the City Council recommending a ‘percent-for-art’ ordinance.
Here is what you need to know:
Letter to City Council
One lesser-known duty of the Civic Arts Commission is to recommend ordinances it deems will support fine arts in Pleasanton.
As such, the Civic Commission unanimously passed a letter supporting the implementation of a ‘percent-for-art’ ordinance to the proposed City Strategic Plan.

After Commission Chair Janice Coleman-Knight signs the letter, it will be handed to the City Council for consideration on August 24th during its Strategic Plan workshop.
What is a ‘percent-for- art’ ordinance?
A ‘percent-for-art’ ordinance allocates a small percentage of construction costs toward public art. This ordinance may apply to both private and city construction projects.
However, the details of the ordinance will be up to the City Council’s discretion if it decides to implement the program. Pleasanton has previously contemplated the idea in its 2014 Cultural Plan, but the ordinance never came to fruition.
